Electronic Ballast - Engineers Garage
A ballast, like any electrical device, generates heat. To ensure maximum ballast life, it is imperative that operating temperatures be kept as low as possible. Burned-out or failing lamps, or high temperatures in or around the fixture, can cause the ballast to overheat, resulting in premature failure. After identifying any abnormal fixtures, you have to find out which component (lamp, ballast, fixture, or electrical supply) is the cause. Select a normal and abnormal fixture. Then, with the electrical power off, interchange the lamps. While doing this, look for differences in lamp color, any broken lamp elements, burned or distorted bases .
